Getting to know a legend. A tribute to Dr. John M. Macdonald.
ABSTRACT:
This tribute honours Dr. John M. Macdonald, MD, FACS, a pioneer in modern wound care whose work connected chronic wound healing, lymphatic function, compression therapy, and care in resource-poor settings. Drawing on a recent conversation with Dr. Macdonald, the article traces his early medical influences, career in thoracic and vascular surgery, transition into wound care and lymphedema treatment, and formative experiences in Haiti treating filariasis and complex wounds. It highlights his recognition that edema inhibits healing, his belief that compression, lymphedema, and arterial insufficiency are interrelated, and his contributions to international wound care standards, disaster medicine, and clinical education. The article also reflects on Dr. Macdonald’s spiritual motivation, commitment to service, poetry, family life, and enduring hope that future physicians will identify and address gaps in everyday medicine.
