DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Obesity Summit is an in-person event which supports our mission of advancing our understanding of obesity and equitable access to care by reducing weight bias\, fostering evidence-informed practice\, and convening diverse stakeholders in the fields of obesity science. We expect over 700 healthcare professionals and researchers to attend. \nObesity is a complex\, multifactorial chronic disease that continues to pose significant challenges to public health worldwide. Obesity affects millions of children\, adolescents and adults globally. It is associated with numerous comorbidities\, including type 2 diabetes\, cardiovascular disease\, and certain types of cancer. \nThe intricate interplay between environmental\, genetic\, and behavioral factors necessitates a sensitive interdisciplinary approach to obesity management. \nThe Canadian Obesity Summit is more than a scientific meeting — it’s a community. Participants will also learn about current treatment approaches and how nutrition and lifestyle may support lymphatic health. Join registered dietitian and cancer survivor Jean LaMantia for an accessible\, evidence-informed overview designed to help cancer survivors better understand and manage their risk. \nAbout the presenter: Jean LaMantia is a registered dietitian\, cancer survivor\, and author of four books on the topics of lymphedema\, cancer\, and intermittent fasting. She is also the creator of daily and weekly journals designed to help individuals with lymphedema and lipedema track their diet and self-care practices and better understand how these factors influence their health. \nJean is the creator and facilitator of Lymphedema Nutrition School\, an online program that supports people living with lymphedema. She also teaches a continuing education course for dietitians and lymphedema therapists focused on advancing education and advocacy for the nutritional management of lymphedema. \nShe has presented at national and international conferences and is a strong advocate for a multidisciplinary approach to lymphedema management. She then turned her efforts to improving coverage nationwide\, and later that same year secured her Congressman as the sponsor for the first-ever federal Lymphedema Treatment Act. In 2010\, Ms. Ferguson founded the Lymphedema Advocacy Group\, to raise the awareness and support that would be necessary to move a bill through Congress\, and in 2022 the Lymphedema Treatment Act became law. The Lymphedema Advocacy Group continues to work on insurance issues and improving access to care in the United States. SUMMARY:Targeting the Lymphedema Microenvironment: Hope for Effective Treatments for Lymphedema
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nDr. Spencer B. Gibson is the Dianne and Irving Kipnes Endowed Chair in Lymphatic Disorders and a Professor in the Department of Oncology at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed his PhD in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Toronto in 1997\, followed by a pre-doctoral fellowship at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Gibson began his academic career at the University of Manitoba in 1999\, where he helped establish and expand the Manitoba Tumor Bank and later served as Director of the Cancer Care Manitoba Research Institute (2012–2015). As Director of Translational Research\, he built key infrastructure to unite multidisciplinary teams and advance impactful cancer research. \nSummary of the talk: \nLymphedema is a major\, often lifelong challenge for cancer patients\, particularly those who undergo lymph node removal or radiation. These treatments can disrupt the lymphatic system\, leading to chronic swelling\, pain\, and infections that significantly affect quality of life. Not everyone with lymphatic damage develops lymphedema—and Dr. Gibson has dedicated his career to understanding why. His research group has identified microenvironmental stresses within the lymphatic system as key drivers of disease progression. By targeting and alleviating these stresses\, his team is uncovering promising pathways toward therapies that may prevent or slow the onset of lymphedema in the future. \nKey takeaways for attendees: \n\nLymphedema microenvironmental stress is important\nLipotoxicity could be a target for treatment.\nMicroenvironmental stress could be a biomarker for lymphedema.
